Influence of sexual genotype on the behaviour of females (genotype WZ) and pseudofemales (genotype ZZ) in the tilapia Oreochromis aureus

چکیده
17α-ethynylestradiol sex-reversed males of Oreochromis aureus (pseudofemales, ∆F, genotype ZZ) are used in aquaculture to produce a male monosex population by crossing with ZZ homogametic normal males. When placed with males (M) and females (F) in the same spawning tank, the spawning rate of F is higher than for ∆F. In order to understand this phenomenon, comparisons were made between the behaviour of 18 F (446 ± 96 mm) and 18 ∆F (401 ± 59 mm). ∆F showed a more aggressive behaviour and were significantly more dominant than normal F in fighting pair experiments (F × ∆F) or in fighting group experiments in four different stocking densities (8, 12, 16 and 83 fish 10 l with F/∆F ratio = 1). ∆F were also more aggressive towards males than F were. The results support the idea that behavioural differences exist between F and ∆F. These differences are probably due to the effect of the sexual genotype on behaviour. © 2002 Ifremer/CNRS/Inra/IRD/Cemagref/Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Mapping and Validation of the Major Sex-Determining Region in Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) Using RAD Sequencing
Sex in Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia) is principally determined by an XX/XY locus but other genetic and environmental factors also influence sex ratio. Restriction Associated DNA (RAD) sequencing was used in two families derived from crossing XY males with females from an isogenic clonal line, in order to identify Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and map the sex-determining region(s...

This study was conducted to produce a high percentage of genetically male tilapia through interspecific hybridization between Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus and Blue tilapia, O. aureus and evaluate sex ratio, productive performance and heterosis of the progeny produced. The results revealed that sex ratios of the progenies of (♀ O. aureus x ♂ O. niloticus) and (♀ O. niloticus x ♂ O. aureus...

متن کاملSex-linked markers and microsatellite locus duplication in the cichlid species Oreochromis tanganicae.
Cichlid species of the genus Oreochromis vary in their genetic sex-determination systems. In this study, we used microsatellite DNA markers to characterize the sex-determination system in Oreochromis tanganicae. Markers on linkage group 3 were associated with phenotypic sex, with an inheritance pattern typical of a female heterogametic species (WZ-ZZ). Further, locus duplication was observed fo...
متن کاملCorrection: Allelic Variant in the Anti-Müllerian Hormone Gene Leads to Autosomal and Temperature-Dependent Sex Reversal in a Selected Nile Tilapia Line
Owing to the demand for sustainable sex-control protocols in aquaculture, research in tilapia sex determination is gaining momentum. The mutual influence of environmental and genetic factors hampers disentangling the complex sex determination mechanism in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Previous linkage analyses have demonstrated quantitative trait loci for the phenotypic sex on linkage g...
